PBBM joins ASEAN leaders in approving Timor-Leste as bloc’s 11th member

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday joined other leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in approving the membership of Timor-Leste as the regional bloc’s 11th member during a gathering in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits and Related Summits.

The ASEAN leaders issued a joint statement announcing Timor-Leste’s membership following the conduct of the Fact-Finding Missions by the ASEAN Political-Security Community, ASEAN Economic Community and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community.

In the statement, the leaders agreed in principle to admit Timor-Leste as member of ASEAN, grant the country an observer status and allow its participation in all ASEAN Meetings including the Summit plenaries.

The grouping also seeks to formalize an objective criteria-based roadmap for Timor-Leste’s full membership based on the milestones identified in the reports of the Fact-Finding Missions conducted by the three ASEAN Community pillars.

It tasked the ASEAN Coordinating Council (ACC) to formulate the roadmap and report to the 42nd ASEAN Summit for adoption.

Also, the statement said, all ASEAN member states and external partners shall fully support Timor-Leste to achieve the milestones through the provision of capacity-building assistance and any other necessary and relevant support for its full membership in ASEAN. #
