PBBM: PH, Australia could strengthen tie-up on agriculture, energy

The Philippines and Australia can collaborate further on agriculture and energy aside from other areas of cooperation, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said on Friday in his bilateral meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

“They (Filipinos) have appreciated very much the hospitality Australians have given them, especially… they always mention when they were just starting out, they didn’t know what to do, where to go to, the Australian government has been terribly helpful,” President Marcos said during the meeting on the sidelines of the 29th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM) in Thailand.

“But we have many, many connections that we, I think, we can strengthen and promote further: the areas of agriculture, the areas of renewable energy,” Marcos pointed out.

For his part, Albanese told the President that he backs the Philippine leader’s stance on the need to address the climate crisis, considered one of the leading global challenges today.

“In your closing comments in the Plenary Session that there was a common thing that you and I have to take action on climate change, and we may deal with that. And I’m sure that we can have great cooperation,” Albanese told Marcos.

Albanese also said he agreed with the President, who described the meeting in Thailand as “an extremely successful conference.”

Among those included in the Philippine delegation were former President and now Senior Deputy Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, House Speaker Martin Romualdez and Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual.

The Philippine President articulated in various fora the need for APEC to address climate change, food security and other challenges for the economic bloc to attain prosperity and stability in the long term. #
