The government will continue to ensure that Philippine engagements with ASEAN and other stakeholders will serve the country’s national interest and the well-being of the Filipino people, President Ferdinand R. Marcos said on Tuesday.
The President made the statement as he leaves for Lao Peoples’ Democratic Republic for the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related summits from October 8-11.
In his departure speech, the President stressed the importance of the ASEAN Summits as avenue for the Philippines to discuss issues confronting ASEAN countries on geopolitical matters and functional cooperation.
“In line with the theme of the ASEAN Chair this year on Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience, the ASEAN Leaders will explore how we can promote regional connectivity amongst ASEAN Member States, as well as to strengthen our resilience to promote sustainable development and inclusive growth,” he said.
President Marcos will also have meetings with ASEAN’s external partners to advance cooperations in food and energy security, trade and investment, supply chain resilience, MSMEs, and addressing the impacts of climate change.
The President highlighted his resolve to advance the Philippines’ interest in discussing international issues that affect the region, particularly in the West Philippines Sea.
He also said ASEAN leaders will be discussing other issues and geopolitical matters such as the situation in Myanmar and the conflict in Ukraine.
“This administration will continue to ensure that our constructive and deepening engagements with ASEAN, our Dialogue Partners, and stakeholders serve our national interest and the well-being of the Filipino people,” the President said. | PND
