PBBM highlights media’s role in fighting disinformation, misinformation

Noting that an informed citizenry is the foundation of a truly working democracy, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. highlighted on Thursday the important role played by the media in combating disinformation and misinformation in the country.

Addressing the 50th Top Level Management Conference (TLMC) organized by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) in Tagaytay City, President Marcos said the vital role of the press is critical as Filipinos live in an age when information can be shared and received instantly, making it hard to distinguish fact from fiction and to stand guard against distortion.

“With technological advancements and the popularity of social media, we have seen a rise in disinformation and misinformation campaigns that could undermine public trust in the entire democratic process, including elections,” the President told the gathering.

“In this regard, the media plays a vital role in dispelling the noxious influence of misinformation, dismantling the lies that are spread by troll farms and other malicious organizations,” he said.

This is where responsible journalism comes in, the President stressed, saying the media’s responsibility goes beyond simply informing. He said media must also enlighten and empower.

The President said the broadcast media helps build public trust that strengthens democracy and champions integrity and accuracy.

At the same time, the continuous evolution of the media warrants the adoption of new skills, resources, and technologies, he said.

“After all, your influence as journalists is profound. With every report, story, and headline, you help shape public perception—strengthening our citizens’ capabilities to make informed choices and to voice their dreams and aspirations,” the President added.

The President said his administration remains committed to making the country safe for journalists and media practitioners.

The government has strengthened its resolve in safeguarding the lives of media personnel and practitioners under the new leadership of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS).

The PTFOMS, chaired by the Secretary of the Department of Justice, was directed to ramp up and intensify its operations in relation to the upcoming 2025 midterm elections, the President said. | PND
