DMW: New MOU heightens protection of health workers in Singapore

Filipino healthcare workers in Singapore are now guaranteed fair treatment and just compensation under a newly-signed memorandum of agreement (MOU), the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced on Wednesday.

In an interview over Malacañang Insider, DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said the MOU is a measure of protection for Filipino health workers.

“They’re already amply protected but this one heightens the protection, ensures fair, ethical, and sustainable recruitment for our OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers) nurses,” Cacdac said.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam witnessed the exchange of the MOU on the Recruitment of Filipino Healthcare Workers to Singapore during the latter’s state visit to the Philippines last week.

Cacdac noted that under the agreement, there is a guarantee of just, fair, and commensurate compensation and fair treatment of Filipino nurses in Singapore.

“Meaning our nurses will be paid similar to their Singaporean nurse counterparts. So, there will be no discrimination in that sense,” Cacdac said.

In addition to the guarantee of fair treatment and compensation, there are also measures to effectively reintegrate nurses, he said.

“So, all told it’s a measure of protection, of safer labor mobility for our nurses, for the mutual interest of both sides, mutual interest of the Singaporean health system as well as the Philippine health system and Philippine economy,” Cacdac stated. | PND
