DOE’s ‘You Have the Power’ campus caravan launched in Vigan City

The Department of Energy (DOE) and the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), launched on Thursday the energy department’s nationwide “You Have the Power” campus caravan at the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) in Vigan City.

Already the fourth leg of the DOE tour, the campus caravan aims to engage the youth in various educational institutions by raising awareness on energy efficiency and conservation, as well as inspiring the youth to become advocates for sustainable practices in their communities.

“By embracing energy efficiency and water conservation practices, we pave the way for a more resilient and sustainable future. Conserve energy and water, reduce waste, and contribute to a healthier planet – one small choice at a time,” the program stated.

The program also aims to “recognize the delicate balance between energy needs, economic growth, and ecological preservation for sustainable coexistence.”

DOE Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella highlighted the importance of developing the country’s clean and indigenous energy resources, especially renewable energy paired with other technologies.

“Your achievements in this symposium exemplify not only the intelligence needed, but also the profound understanding of the importance of sustainable energy practices,” Fuentebella said in his speech.

“The innovative solutions and creativity will serve as a shining light in our collective journey as a country towards a greener and more sustainable future. ‘Pag hindi natin ito nagawa, mananatili tayong naka-hostage ng ibang bansa na nagbebenta sa atin ng kanilang energy fuel,” he added.

PCO Director Faith De Guia and DOE Director Patrick Aquino echoed the sentiments of Undersecretary Fuentebella, emphasizing the importance of practicing energy efficiency and conservation.

“Each action we take, no matter how small, has the power to create a ripple effect of positive change … every effort counts towards building a more sustainable and resilient world,” Aquino said.

“Simply put, energy sustainability means using energy wisely, meeting our needs today without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same … when we talk about energy issues, we do not just inform; we empower others to make changes in their own lives,” De Guia added.

The event featured activities such as a quiz bee and a poster-making competition, covering topics like energy efficiency, conservation, renewable energy, emerging technologies, resilience, and water efficiency. The DOE also conducted an energy audit with UNP students.

The resource speakers were University of Northern Philippines Director Rolando Navarro, Director Aquino, and Director De Guia, with Undersecretary Fuentebella delivering the keynote message.
