President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday said the newly rehabilitated Philippine Fisheries Development Authority–Iloilo Fish Port Complex (PFDA–IFPC) will not only serve as a vital hub for local fisherfolk, but will also soon emerge as a tourist and culinary destination in Iloilo.
In his speech during the inauguration of the fishport complex in Barangay Baybay Tanza in Iloilo City, President Marcos said the facility will have restaurants and cooking areas as part of its development plan.
“Magkakaroon ng restawran, ng mga lutuan, para hindi lamang ito fish port at magiging tourist destination na rin,” President Marcos said, crediting Iloilo officials for the idea.
The President also said that the improved port will benefit around 1,500 fisherfolk and include a modern cold storage facility powered by solar energy.
“Napakalaking bagay… sa pagbabago nitong facility na ito, marami tayong maaaring gawin na hindi natin kayang gawin noon, kagaya ng paglagay ng cold storage,” the President said.
The Chief Executive emphasized that the addition of cold storage will help maintain the freshness of the catch, keeping its market value high even when transported over long distances.
President Marcos said the solar-powered facility helps reduce production and storage costs for the catch.
“Hindi na tayo kailangan magpaandar ng generator, na gumamit ng krudo. Pero mayroon na tayong solar,” President Marcos said, underscoring the project’s sustainability feature.
President Marcos said that upgrading fish ports is consistent with his administration’s broader goal of connecting farmers and fisherfolk directly to markets.
“Pinapalapit natin sa market ang ating mga mangingisda. Lahat ng sektor ng agrikultura ganito po ang aming ginagawa,” said the President.
The PFDA–IFPC rehabilitation is expected to spur economic activity in Iloilo, generate new livelihood opportunities, and attract both local and international visitors eager to experience fresh seafood and the city’s fishing culture.
Officials present at the inauguration included Department of Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Manuel Bonoan, Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., and Iloilo City District Representative Julienne “Jam-Jam” Baronda. | PND
