President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Tuesday ordered the Office of the President (OP) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to immediately help victims of the recent flooding in Cebu.
Three individuals reportedly died while six others remain missing due to heavy flooding in Cebu City on Monday.
“I also directed the Office of the President and the DSWD to provide assistance to the local government units affected by the flooding. We include all those affected in our thoughts and in our prayers,” President Marcos said during the opening ceremony of the 64th Palarong Pambansa in Cebu City.
The event was attended by more than 500 athletes from 17 regions.
Before starting his speech, the President said he received initial reports on the effects of heavy rains in Cebu. The rains caused flash floods and damages to properties, he said.
Concerned government agencies are actively conducting search and rescue operations, he said.
“Rest assured, national and local governments are working closely to bring speedy help to those who are affected by the heavy rains, especially in Carmen, in Minglanilla, and Cebu,” the Chief Executive said.
President Marcos added, “we remain resilient and focused on the goal just like the athletes here who are about to compete in the Palarong Pambansa.”
“It is therefore, with great deal of pride that I welcome all our athletes, our trainers, our coaches, and guests to the opening of Palarong [Pambansa] 2024,” he added. | PND
