President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. paid tribute to former senator Santanina Tillah Rasul, praising her as “a trailblazer for equality and empowerment.”

Rasul, the first Muslim Filipina member of the Senate, passed away on November 28 at the age of 94.

“It is with profound sadness that I extend my condolences on the passing of Senator Santanina “Nina” T. Rasul. This is a loss deeply felt not only by your family, but by the entire Filipino nation,” President Marcos said in a statement.

“As the first and only Muslim woman senator to serve the Philippines, Senator Rasul broke barriers through her legislative endeavors and became a trailblazer for equality and empowerment. Her contributions were not just historic—they were transformative,” he added.

The President also underscored Rasul “championed the rights of marginalized communities, opened doors for women in the military, and inspired countless Filipinos, especially those from underrepresented sectors, to believe in their potential.”

President Marcos said the late Senator’s legacy goes even beyond her legislative accomplishments.

“She was a woman of wisdom, grace, and unshakable integrity. Her impact was felt not only within the halls of government, but in the lives of the people she so selflessly served,” the President said.

“In this moment of sorrow, I hope you can find solace in knowing that her extraordinary life and legacy will forever be etched in our nation’s history and in the hearts of those she touched. She leaves behind a powerful reminder of the change one person can bring through courage, compassion, and conviction,” he added.
