As part of the administration’s efforts to enhance the Philippines’ fishery production and exports, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday expressed his support for the private sector, particularly those engaged in export activities.
President Marcos toured the tuna and sardines processing facility of General Tuna Corp. at the Millenium Industrial Economic Zone in Barangay Tambler, General Santos City. General Tuna Corp. is a major producer of canned tuna and sardines, as well as other products.
During his visit to the General Santos City Fish Port Complex, where tuna is unloaded, President Marcos recognized GenSan’s vital contribution to the fisheries industry, which helps feed the country.
The President acknowledged the city for its tuna exports, which significantly contribute to the economy.
“Hindi lamang sa food supply kung hindi pati sa pag-export natin. Ang laki rin ng kontribusyon sa ating ekonomiya itong inyong industriya kaya’t kailangan ang pamahalaan ay nandiyan,” the President said at a town hall meeting with fisherfolks.
According to a company spokesperson, General Tuna products are present in nine out of ten Filipino households as of 2024.
The company’s business is also present in 82 markets worldwide.
President Marcos inspected the ongoing rehabilitation of the General Santos City Fish Port Complex being spearheaded by the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA).
The port complex is home to six of the seven tuna canneries and employs more than 200,000 people. | PND
