PH, Czech Republic to bolster defense, trade, investment ties

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said the Philippines and the Czech Republic look forward to deepening their cooperation on a wide range of issues such as defense, trade and investment, university-to-university linkages as well as judicial and labor cooperation.

In a press statement on Monday following his bilateral meeting with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, President Marcos announced the successful conclusion of their bilateral meeting in Malacañang, where they exchanged views on regional and international issues of common concern.

The President said the meeting marks an important milestone in the diplomatic relations between the Czech Republic and the Philippines, made even more significant as the two countries celebrate the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations this year.

“I express our commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship between our two countries. We recognize the importance of building on the existing areas of cooperation and exploring new opportunities for collaboration,” the chief executive said.

The President also emphasized the Philippines’ strategic location in Southeast Asia and its potential as a gateway to the region.

“We shared positive developments in the Philippine economy, including our high GDP growth rate and strong economic outlook, in context of a difficult and volatile world economic situation,” the President said.

There was also an interesting exchange of views regarding regional and international issues, including the West Philippine Sea and Cross Strait Relations, war in Ukraine, among others, the President said, noting that they both underscored their countries’ shared commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

Czech Prime Minister Fiala arrived in Manila Sunday night for a two-day official visit to the Philippines.

An official dinner, to be hosted by the President in honor of the visiting Czech leader, will cap Monday’s activities at the Palace.

Prime Minister Fiala is also scheduled to lay a wreath at the Rizal Park as part of his official itinerary. #
