Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Enrique Manalo will continue to serve in his post pending the official confirmation of his appointment as the Philippines’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN).
Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin clarified Manalo’s current status in the administration during a Palace press briefing on Tuesday, aiming to dispel any confusion regarding his appointment.
“Because of the necessity for him (Manalo) to be confirmed before going over as permanent envoy to the United Nations, the President recognizes the designation to be considered as done only after his confirmation,” Bersamin said.
“In the meanwhile, he will remain as the Secretary of Foreign Affairs.”
Bersamin earlier announced the appointment of Manalo to the UN post to replace Ambassador Antonio M. Lagdameo, who had expressed intention to retire by July 31.
The Executive Secretary said Manalo will be replaced by the DFA Undersecretary for bilateral relations and ASEAN affairs, Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro.
Manalo will remain as Foreign Affairs Secretary until the transition is finalized, Bersamin explained.
“It’s necessary to clarify that because there should be no uncertainty about his status,” Bersamin said. | PND
