President Duterte visits wake of Gokongwei matriarch

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Sunday paid his last respects to Elizabeth Yu Gokongwei, who passed away Saturday, just a week after the death of her husband John Gokongwei Jr.

President Duterte arrived Sunday at the Heritage Park Mortuary & Crematory in Taguig City and condoled with the Gokongwei family.

The President chatted with the members of the Gokongwei family and also posed for a photo opportunity before leaving the premises.

According to reports, Mrs. Gokongwei was tired of her husband’s hospitalization and subsequently suffered a stroke. She died Saturday, November 16.

The Gokongwei matriarch is a founding member of the Robinsons Department Store and headed its merchandising department from 1980 to 1992.

She is also a philanthropist and a member of the board of trustees of the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF).

Mrs. Gokongwei was characterized by her children as a selfless mother who always put her family first and described her as the reason behind John Gokongwei’s success.
