TAGUIG CITY — President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Monday morning, May 6, visited the wake of former House Speaker Prospero “Boy” Nograles Jr., who passed away at the age of 71 on Saturday, May 4.
President Duterte arrived at 12:12 a.m. at the Heritage Park to pay his last respects to Nograles, the “pride of Mindanao,” who is considered as one of the prominent political leaders in Mindanao.
The President offered his sincere condolences to Nograles’ bereaved wife, Rhodora; his son, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles; and other family members. President Duterte stayed for more than two hours.
The former House Speaker was first elected as representative of the First District of Davao City in 1989. He again won the seat in 1995, 2001, 2004, and 2007.
He served as vice chairman of the House Contingent in the Commission on Appointments, House Majority Leader, and Chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development.
During the presidency of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Nograles was the first Mindanaoan to become House Speaker in 2008 after he was elected for the post.
The remains of the former House Speaker will be flown to Davao on Tuesday, May 7. ###PND
